Vision Problems and Solutions: Some Useful Tips

by : Suzanne Hughes

Of the myriad problems that may occur in vision, some of the more common ones are blurriness, blind spots and floaters. Objects appear blurred when the capacity of the eye to focus wanes. Blind spots are holes in the visual field due to local insensitivity of the retina. Floaters may occur due to a variety of reasons as well.

If you experience any of these problems, you must make it a point to visit your doctor, because many serious systemic diseases, like diabetes, or high blood pressure, could lie behind these seemingly innocuous symptoms. However, the care of any ocular problem must be vetted by a professional, who will prescribe the spectacles or contact lenses that will be best suited to you.

Poor Eyesight: Causative Factors

Although you never considered this, it is greatly possible that over exhaustion or stress is having a deleterious effect on your eye sight. Even spending long hours under the glare of the sun can harm your vision, often even causing you to brief phases of blindness.

If you have been recently put on a diet of pills and are experiencing problems with your eyesight, it is advisable that you check out the possible side effects of the medication. The medicines that may have an adverse effect on your eye sight are antihistamines, digitalis derivatives, indomethacin, phenothiazines (like Compazine for nausea, Thorazine and Stelazine for schizophrenia) anticholinergics, some high blood pressure pills (guanethidine, reserpine, and thiazide diuretics), ethambutol (for tuberculosis), and medications for malaria.

Nutrition and Eyesight

Another important factor in eye care is nutrition. A balanced diet helps your eyesight more than you can imagine. Adequate quantities of three vitamins in your diet contribute invaluably towards improving your faltering vision. These are Vitamins A, C and E. The most important is Vitamin A, or Retinol, which is found in carrots, tomatoes, mangoes, cabbages and lettuce. Animal sources of the same vitamin are liver, fish liver oils, egg yolk and dairy products. The physiological functions of this vitamin are:

a) The synthesis of visual pigments in the retina, and
b) and sensation of vision.

Deficiency of this vitamin in the body may lead to night blindness, and a condition called Xerophthalmia, which causes the conjunctiva to dry up. It also leads to Keratomalacia, which is the ulceration and softening of the cornea, ultimately causing blindness.

- Never put too much pressure on your eyes, by exerting too much. If you are experiencing soreness, getting dark circles or even if your eyes are watering, then it is time for you to exercise some caution to preserve your eyesight.

- If you work at the computer for long hours, then wear glasses or lenses that provide additional protection from the harmful rays emanated by the computer screen. These glasses ad lenses cost more than ordinary glasses, but go a long way in protecting your eyes from excessive strain.

- When you watch television, sit at least six feet away from the screen. Don't allow your children to play video games for long stretches of time.

Eye Therapy

And even if you have been experiencing problems with your eyesight, you need not worry. The frames available in stores nowadays are getting smarter and trendier. You can choose from a wide range of frames: from whacky to sophisticated, these frames add character to your appearance and can even be your unique style statement.

If donning glasses just doesn't appeal to you, then maybe you could try laser surgery. This is a far more expensive option, but it's a one time investment and. refractive laser surgery is a technique that is based on remolding the surface contour of the cornea to augment the effectiveness of natural refraction. There is of course a downside to this therapy. It is not effective in people with increased or irregular corneal optical density and those with.
